Crews lifted and moved the 49-year-old, 900t bridge and replaced it with a pre-constructed bridge that was built nearby. The province’s bridge replacements traditionally take nine to 12 months.

Replacing the bridge in less than three days helped prevent traffic congestion for the 7,000 vehicles that use it every day.

Ontario had previously used rapid bridge replacement technology to replace four bridges - three on Highway 417 and one on Highway 403.

In 2007 Ontario was the first province in Canada to use rapid technology to replace a highway bridge.

Ontario is investing US$2.41 billion in road and bridge construction projects this year. It has 16,600km of provincial highway and 2,756 bridges.
