Plans submitted for Brunel bridge rebuild
British Waterways has submitted plans to Westminster City Council to reconstruct Isambard Kingdom Brunel's first iron bridge close to where it was discovered two years ago. The proposal involves positioning the bridge across the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal. The bridge, which dates back to 1838, was hidden for decades within a modern brick road bridge and was rediscovered as part of the Paddington Bridge project. It was dismantled in 2004 and is being stored by English Heritage until the US$6 million needed for the reconstruction can be raised.
