The 29.8km extension from Amarante to Vila Real is being built by a consortium of Somague and MSF Engenharia. Work includes two tunnels, with a total length of 5.7km, and 13 viaducts totalling 4km.

Linden Comansa tower cranes are in use at four of the viaducts, with 14 supplied by Ibergru, the Spanish company’s official distributor in Portugal. Six flat-top tower cranes are at work building the piers highest and longest structure - Viaduct No 3, in the valley of the Marão River. It will have a height of 134m, length of almost 911m and width of 29m.

More than US$950m is being invested in the project, which will improve the road connections between north east Portugal and Spain.
