The first of eight bridges in need of replacement on the island of Barbados will shortly be shipped from China.

The structure has been designed and fabricated by China National Complete Plant Import and Export Corporation (Complant) for the Barbados Ministry of Transport and Works.

While the bridge is shipping, Complant will start preparatory works, including a demolition of the old bridge, and construction of protective gabions.

The Bruce Vale bridge was closed in 2021 because of a structural failure. It is being replaced as part of the Scotland District Road Rehabilitation Programme (SDRRP). Complant is designing and reconstructing eight of the island’s 70 bridges. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport and Works is analysing all the island’s bridge infrastructure to ensure it has up to date and accurate information about condition, safety and durability. This information will help with the planning of a preventative maintenance programme.
