The Danish Road Directorate, Vejdirektoratet, is starting the prequalification process to find companies and consortia wanting to bid on what will be the country’s third-longest bridge. It is holding an information meeting for potential bidders next week.

“The prequalification must ensure that tenderers have what it takes for such a large and comprehensive task, " said Erik Stoklund Larsen of Vejdirektoratet.

Five consortia will be invited to bid and will be issued with tender documents in June, with bids due in by April 2016. The intention is to sign the contract in summer 2016.

The project to build the new crossing and demolish the old Storstrøm has been divided into three contracts. The initial prequalification covers the largest contract, the actual construction of the 4km-long Storstrøm at an estimated cost of about  US$609 million. Both girder and cable-stayed options are covered in the project's environmental impact assessment (link opens in new tab).

The other contracts that will be tendered at a later date and cover the demolition of the old Storstrøm and construction of new local roads.
