A federal agency yesterday started work to stabilise a failed tram bridge in the German city of Dresden.
A 100m length of Carola Bridge, which crosses the river Elbe, collapsed early on Wednesday morning. There were no injuries. The affected portion, Section C, carries an active travel path, tram lines and a hot water heating culvert.

The Federal Agency of Technical Relief carried out safety work to stabilise the site with trestles under the bridge’s support points. Measurements are being taken from reference points on the structure to gain insight into any further movement.
The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
Section C was due for renovation in 2025. The other two sections of the bridge were renovated recently, but have been closed for checks.
