Washington State Department of Transportation in the USA has picked Aberdeen Log Yard as its preferred site for construction of the pontoons for the SR520 floating bridge. A request for proposals will be issued later this month to contractors.
Shortlisted contractors will be asked to submit bids for design and construction at the preferred site. The contract is expected to be worth between US$300 million and US$500 million.
The results of a contract for pontoon construction tests are due to be announced next week. Field-testing will begin in September of various pontoon construction methods and techniques. The work will include constructing mock-up sections and testing different concrete mixes and forming methods.
