Third River Crossing First Leaf Installation

First, the two 700t leaves were transported via barge from Antwerp, Belgium, to the construction site of the newly named Herring Bridge on the river Yare. Then, a Matador 3 crane lifted the leaves and placed them into position. The installation was carried out during a 72-hour river possession period, with the east leaf lifted into place first in a nine-hour operation (link opens in new tab). The counterbalance weight for each leaf was created by pouring 500t of concrete.

Both leaves will remain in an open position for several weeks to allow traffic on the river. Work on the control tower, plant rooms and all surrounding highway infrastructure will continue at pace over the weeks ahead. Norfolk County Council aims to have the Herring Bridge operational and open to traffic by Summer 2023.
