Start date for viaduct work
A US$30 million widening of the East Viaduct on the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension (NBHCE) of the New Jersey Turnpike in Jersey City, USA is scheduled to start in December 2002. Completion is set for October 2003.The NBHCE extends from Newark Airport at Interchange 14 east to the Holland Tunnel for a distance of 12.8km, of which 9.6km are on bridges, and Greenman-Pedersen (GPI) has been selected by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) to provide design services for the project. The East Viaduct is located east of Interchange 14C near the Liberty Science Center and Liberty State Park, and the project is intended to increase capacity of the Grand Street exit ramp and improve access to the Jersey City waterfront. The project entails widening the Grand Street exit ramp and about 1,200m of the existing viaduct; bridge deck and parapet replacement; new lighting and drainage, and utility relocations. GPI will provide geometric design studies, alternatives analysis for possible structure types and span configurations, seismic analysis and retrofit design, traffic engineering, environmental permitting, shop drawing review and construction support services. The firm will also be responsible for developing and implementing an extensive community involvement/outreach programme.
