The design selected for a bridge between the US states of Ohio and Kentucky is a cable-stayed independent deck structure.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear revealed that the companion structure for the Brent Spence Bridge will have two decks, both supported by cables. The upper deck will carry northbound drivers, while southbound drivers will use the lower.

The Brent Spence Bridge between Covington, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio is one of the USA’s worst road traffic bottlenecks. The existing bridge, a double deck cantilevered truss, dates back to 1963. These days, it carries a traffic volume that exceeds its intended capacity.
The new companion bridge will take interstate traffic, while local travellers will use the existing structure. Subject to approval from the Federal Highway Administration, the project will move forward under a design-build contract (link opens in new tab).
