Stonecutters Bridge: design chosen
A design team comprising Halcrow Group, Flint & Neill Partnership, Dissing + Weitling and the Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute has won the second stage design competition for the landmark US$650 million Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong. A total of 27 submissions were originally received (later reduced to five) by the Highways Department of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for what will be the world's longest cable-stayed bridge. The bridge will be a total of some 1,800m long with a main span of 1,018m. It will have two 290m high circular single leg pylons, making them the world's tallest bridge towers. Spanning Hong Kong's Rambler Channel and the entrance to the Kwai Chung container port, the bridge will become a prominent feature on the Hong Kong skyline, 'helping to promote the image of Hong Kong as a vibrant, important centre for international trade.' The bridge is part of the US$2 billion Route 9 project that will link Tsing Yi, Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin, and is of great importance because it can be clearly seen from the main downtown area of Hong Kong. It is now likely that the Hong Kong Highways Department will request bids for the detailed design consultancy.
