The commissioners of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey have authorised spending of up to US$10 million on an analysis to help address navigational issues for ships passing under the Bayonne Bridge.
Opening of the Panama Canal expansion in 2014 is expected to mean that larger container ships will want to call in the port but the bridge's low clearance may prevent them from reaching the container terminals west of the bridge.
The evaluation will establish conceptual cost estimates and schedules for options to improve access and will include a regional cost-benefit analysis of the alternatives.
