The need for cost-effective expansion of Chongqing's transit rail network led to the selection of a relatively new design concept, the partially cable-supported girder bridge, developed by TY Lin International's chairman Man-Chung Tang.
The bridges will each carry four lanes of traffic plus pedestrian paths on their upper decks and two transit tracks on their lower decks. A single plane of cables will support the steel girder for each bridge.
The city is intersected by two major rivers, the Yangtze in the south and the Jialing in the north. The new Dongshuimen Bridge will cross the Yangtze River from the south to the city's centre on the Yuzhong peninsula. A tunnel will carry traffic through the heart Chongqing to the northern side of the peninsula, where it will connect with the new Qianximen Bridge crossing the Jialing River to the northern district.
The bridges are scheduled to begin construction this year.
