The hybrid cable stayed/suspension bridge has an overall length of 220m, made up of two 61m-long central spans and side spans of 49m each. A number of structural elements have deteriorated to such an extent that they pose a risk to the bridge's integrity and the safety of both road and river users. Some elements that have been structurally assessed have been found to be substandard.
The structure has listed status and the strengthening proposals take into consideration English Heritage's concerns for achieving maximum results with minimum disruption to the existing fabric of the bridge. The majority of the proposed work is below deck, though large areas of deck will have to be removed during the project. The deck's supporting structure will be given full corrosion protection. Full repainting of the bridge and upgrading of its lighting will also be carried out as part of the contract.
Work is expected to begin in September for completion in March 2011.
The deadline for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is noon on 2 March. Invitations to tender will be sent to selected candidates a month later.
