The steel superstructure of the new Athabasca River Bridge in Alberta, Canada, touched down earlier this week at the second pier.

All ten girder lines for the 472m-long bridge are being launched simultaneously in what is believed to be the widest launch in Canada, as well being as one of the heaviest and longest.

The first 30m-wide, 61m-long span was launched within a week.

Flatiron is general contractor and Surespan Construction is the steel erection sub-contractor for the US$113 million bridge, which is being built near Fort McMurray. Infinity Engineering Group is the construction engineer for the detailed design of the launch.
