The Turkish government is planning to build a new bridge across the Dardenelles strait, which separates Asia and Europe.
Transport minister Lutfi Elvan announced the project during an interview on Turkish television yesterday.
It is the latest in a series of major projects being driven forward by president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The narrowest point of the busy waterway is 1.2km wide.
