A vehicle, streetcar and pedestrian bridge in the US state of Connecticut that was demolished in 2010 will finally be replaced after the US Department of Transportation awarded the project a grant of US$24.6 million.
The Congress Street Bridge over the Pequonnock River in Bridgeport opened in 1909. The Scherzer rolling-lift bridge operated until 1997 when it was found that the substructure was moving. Connecticut Department of Transportation closed it and left it in the open position until its demolition in 2010.
Campaigners have been attempting to fund first the demolition and then replacement ever since.
The grant has been delivered by the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) scheme.
