The US$300,000 project, which is being tendered under TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), will also identify the dynamic forces resulting from sliding a bridge or moving it using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs).

Many state DOTs and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are actively promoting accelerated bridge construction (ABC) and the use of prefabricated bridge elements and systems (PBES) is growing fast.

Challenges have arisen during construction related to the installation of adjacent PBES and construction erection tolerances. Other challenges come from sliding or transporting an entire bridge. TRB said that these dynamic forces and their effects on bridge systems are not covered in current design and construction guides and need to be addressed immediately.

The deadline for submission of proposals is 21 November. Details are on the TRB website (link opens in new tab).
