A single-lane 1899 structure that has reached the end of its life will be replaced with a modern steel bridge under a US$39 million contract awarded by PennDOT.

Layton Bridge is a 17-span steel Pratt Truss bridge over the Youghiogheny River in the south west of the state. To the north of the bridge, the road runs through a short tunnel under a river cliff. Now at the end of its life because of corrosion, the structure will be replaced with a new bridge 60m to the south east. Contractor Fay S&B USA will build the two-lane three-span composite steel I-girder structure from a temporary trestle, and the current bridge will remain open throughout. The tunnel will be closed and sealed as the alignment of the new bridge means it is no longer needed.
PennDOT has also contracted Fay S&B to rehabilitate one bridge over Washington Run and replace another.
