Students from the University of Akron (UA) have won a competition to design a pedestrian bridge to be built entirely of titanium.

Five finalists had been picked from 17 entries representing 11 US universities. A team from Ball State University came second.

The competition was co-sponsored by the Defense Metals Technology Center and UA to showcase the cost-effectiveness and practicality of titanium. The bridge will provide a better link to an area of the campus that is separated by railway tracks.
