An expert jury in Switzerland has selected a curving design for a bridge over the Rhine after two days of deliberation.

The towns of Diepoldsau and Widnau in the north west of the country near the border with Austria are separated by the Rhine. They held an open anonymous competition for the design of a new foot and cycle bridge.

The chosen design, titled Flaneur, was developed by sbp, Bernardo Bader Architekten and Lars Ruge Landschaften. The jury said it stood out for it architectural clarity and natural integration into the river and its embankment and for its curved alignment.

The bridge, which will be constructed from fabricated segments, will consist of a closed weathering steel box divided into five spans. The superstructure is integrally connected to the piers to minimise maintenance. The reinforced concrete piers are a slender 80cm wide to reduce flow resistance.
