The Welsh Assembly Government and Cardiff Council have announced an investment in sustainable transport that includes the final funding required to build the Pont-y-Werin Bridge.

The US$6.9 million bascule bridge will provide a traffic-free route for pedestrians and cyclists across the River Ely between Cardiff Bay and Penarth.

The bridge had been proposed as part of a successful bid in 2007 for lottery funding for 79 sustainable travel routes across the UK. This led to sustainable transport charity Sustrans awarding US$1.6 million towards the project, with further funds pledged by Cardiff Council and Vale of Glamorgan Coucil. This week's announcement will remove the funding shortfall that had delayed the bridge. Planning approvals are in place.
