The USA's Federal Transit Administration has given approval for preliminarary engineering to start on the Portland-Milwaukie light rail project, an 11.7km line that includes a major bridge over the Willamette River. The design by Rosales & Partners and Schlaich Bergermann & Partner is for a hybrid cable-stayed and suspension bridge.

The bridge will be for use solely by cyclists, pedestrians and the new transit line. The proposals are on display in Portland this week, and Manuel Rosales is giving a lecture about the design today.

The line's final environmental impact statement is due for completion in 2010 and construction is expected to begin the following year.
