The awards were announced a year to the day after president Barack Obama signed the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act into law. Bridges receiving funds include US$49.48 million for the I-244 Mulitmodal Bridge replacement in Oklahoma, US$30 million to replace the Black River Bridge in Michigan, US$21.5 million for the Park East Corridor Lift Bridges in Wisconsin and US$20 million for replacement of the Milton-Madison Bridge linking Kentucky and Indiana. The I-85 corridor improvement and Yadkin River Crossing in North Carolina also gets US$10 million.

Criteria for selection included the project's contribution to economic competitiveness, improving safety and condition of the existing transportation system and demonstrating strong collaboration among a broad range of participants, including the private sector.
