Finishing works are under way on the Gordie Howe Bridge which is expected to open by the end of the year. The 2.5km crossing will complete a missing link on the key trucking route between Michigan’s I-75 and Ontario’s 401 highways, enhancing trade and travel between the US and Canada.

Boasting North America’s longest cable-stayed bridge span at 853m, the crossing is supported by 216 cable stays anchored to two 220m-high A-shaped towers (Bd&e issue 116). Its carriageway will carry six lanes of traffic plus a pedestrian and cycling shared-path.

The project is being delivered through a public-private partnership (P3) by the Bridging North America joint venture, comprising ACS Infrastructure Canada, Fluor Canada and Aecon Concessions, on behalf of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. Aecom provided engineering and architecture services.

According to recent project updates, deck paving and line marking are now complete, with crews shifting their focus to other finishing works, including testing the lighting system. Meanwhile, US and Canadian border agencies are preparing their respective ports of entry facilities, progressing with outfitting and commissioning activities.
