AASHTO publishes highway security guides
Two guidebooks on transportation security, "A Guide to Highway Vulnerability Assessment for Critical Asset Identification and Protection" and "A Guide to Updating Highway Emergency Plans for Terrorist Incidents," have been published for the use of pertinent public agencies by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). "These publications represent the work of AASHTO's special Task Force on Security, convened days after the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001," AASHTO executive director John Horsley said. The special task force, which included not only state DOT officials but also representatives of the U.S. Department of Defense, the Military and Traffic Management Command, the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Office of Emergency Preparedness, focused on thorough approaches to assessing highway, bridge and tunnel vulnerabilities, traffic information systems, and the operations of commercial vehicles on public highways.
