Benthem Crouwel Architekten and Arup Amsterdam have teamed up to produce a winning bridge design for the 'Ponte Palazzo' footbridge in Den Bosch in the Netherlands.
The Ponte Palazzo will connect the Paleiskwartier and the old city centre. The design for the 260m-long bridge creates a park above the city, similar to the Highline in New York and the Promenade Plantée in Paris. It will have connections to the entrances of new buildings that will be built adjacent to it, making it a park as well as a bridge.
A steel concrete structure was chosen for the deck, using folded weathering steel. The fact that this still needs no preservation, makes construction and maintenance economical.
The jury said of the winning design: "the robust appearance in combination with the chosen colour and material is a monumental design that fits the city of 's-Hertogenbosch'."
