A town in New South Wales, Australia, has started construction of a suspension bridge that will replace a structure frequently damaged by heavy seasonal river flows.
The new bridge will provide a resilient cycle and foot connection between the central business district of the town of Casino and recreational facilities. It will raise the crossing above flood levels and is designed to withstand strong river flows during extreme weather.
Site work is underway now, with foundation footings being laid on either side of the river. The main bridge structure will be installed in March or April.
The US$2.3 million funding came from the Australian and state governments.
Richmond Valley Council expects contractor and designer Forge Outdoors to complete the bridge by the end of June 2026.
