The state government of New South Wales, Australia, has awarded a US$12.6 million contract for a concept design for the replacement or upgrade of the Sheahan Bridge.
WSP Australia will develop a concept design and assess the environmental impact of various upgrade and replacement options for the northbound half of the bridge that carries the Hume Highway, a major freight corridor, over the Murrumbidgee River.
This side of the bridge dates to 1977 is under weight restrictions which limit its use during emergency and planned closures of the southbound half of the bridge (dating to 2009).
The options for the upgrade include a replacement bridge on a new alignment; replacement on the current alignment; and strengthening the existing bridge.
Transport for NSW will announce its preferred option in 2026.
