The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge reopened on Monday morning local time after being closed to traffic since last Tuesday when a cross bar and two rods had fallen. The steelwork that came adrift was part of an emergency repair that had been carried out last month on a cracked eyebar.

Vibrations from the bridge had caused metal fatigue of the bracket assembly. Heavy wind may have contributed to the problem.

This week's repair is similar the one carried out last month, but with some enhancements, including deeper, stronger welds to connect crossbars and saddles into a single unit to avoid metal-on-metal fatigue. The work also involves four new rods.
