The Bermudan Minister of Public Works has promised that US$5 million will be set aside in the next budget for replacement of a bridge presently under repair.
St George’s Swing Bridge between St David’s and St George’s Islands was built in 1964 and has undergone a series of repairs in recent years. It no longer opens, blocking shipping access to the harbour.
The Minister of Public Works David Burch promised that US$5 million had been set aside in Bermuda’s next budget for the preliminary work on a new bridge which will lie to the east of the present structure.
The project has been on the cards since 2016. The ministry has already consulted residents, and secured land rights. The minister added, “We now have local expertise within the Ministry, thanks to a Bermudian engineer who trained abroad specifically for this project.”
It is likely the build will take three years, but after that the transition to the new bridge will be immediate, and the old bridge will then be dismantled. A proposed design for St George’s bridge by a UK team was unveiled in 2018 (link opens in new tab).
