The new US$42,000 Kirroughtree Wheel was designed and built by Andy Hopkins, 7stanes technical officer with Forestry Commission Scotland, with support from Alasdair Rennie of Sustainable Scotland and other Forestry Commission Scotland staff. 7stanes is a not-for-profit community organisation.
The brief from Keith Muir, head of tourism at Galloway Forest Park, was to guarantee that bikers crossed over walkers without conflict. Hopkins came up with the design after looking at the area where the bike trails end and at the new Kirroughtree Visitor Centre design.
Graeme White of the Forestry Commission’s civil engineering team worked on the engineering of the scheme and Hope Engineering donated components.
