Hundreds of people watched yesterday as a 137m-long section of the old Liberty Memorial Bridge was blown up in North Dakota, USA. The historic crossing of the Missouri River has been replaced by a new bridge which opened to trafffic in July.

The western-most span and through-truss were cut into 26 pieces then dropped into the water using incendiary devices, for retrieval by crane. The remaining trusses will be demolished later this month.

Videos of the demolition are on the project website at http://www.memorialbridge.info/20081006-demolition.html
