'Bouncing' bridge recommendations
Ove Arup, the consulting engineers for London's 'bouncing' Millennium Footbridge across the River Thames, have submitted to their partners (the Millennium Bridge Trust, Southwark Council and the Corporation of London) recommendations on the solution to the excessive movement of the 320m long bridge in certain conditions. This follows an intensive research programme, including three university studies and extensive consultation with experts around the world, following the closure of the US$27 million bridge on 12 June, two days after it opened. David Bell, chairman of the Millennium Bridge Trust, said the technical report is now the subject of consideration and discussion between the partners and their advisors. 'The whole team is guided by a commitment to achieve the permanent opening of the bridge at the earliest opportunity. A decision on the way forward is expected shortly.'
