The Go Between Bridge in the Australian city of Brisbane has opened to traffic following a aggressive design and construction schedule that involved round-the-clock working to deliver the project in less than two years.
The 300m-long, three-span concrete balanced cantilever bridge is the city's first new river crossing for inner-city traffic in 40 years. It was built by the Hale Street Link Alliance, which brought together three construction partners - Seymour Whyte, Macmahon Constructions and Bouygues Travaux Publics - in an alliance with Brisbane City Council and designer Hyder Consulting. Arup was independent verifier for the project, responsible for ensuring the Hale Street Link Alliance met the council's design, construction and commissioning obligations. 'Arup teams in Hong Kong and the UK worked closely with staff in Brisbane, offering input at value engineering workshops, design meetings and in design and drawing reviews.
'The size of the project and the inner-city location with large peak hour traffic volumes presented significant challenges," said Arup independent verification representative Marijke Coenders. "The Hale Street Link Alliance put in a great effort to minimise the impact of construction works to the local businesses and traffic flows. Through concerted design and construction efforts, the team worked around the clock to deliver an exceptional product ahead of schedule."
