The campaign describes the bridge as Edmonton’s most iconic structure, “but when the sun goes down, that symbol fades away”.

The project involves decking out the High Level Bridge with thousands of programmable LED lights. The light-the-bridge project will feature 1,120 lumieres containing almost 60,000 LEDs. People were asked to pay CA$25 (US$23) to buy a bulb; they will be told where ‘their bulb’ is located. More than 10,000 people and over 300 businesses have contributed.

The City of Edmonton, while supporting the project and overseeing it, is not a financial partner in the design and installation of the lights. All the money is being raised from the buy-a-bulb drive or the corporate sector.

The appeal still runs for another week, with any additional funds raised being used to help with extra costs such as replacement bulbs.

The aim is for the bridge to be lit up on Canada Day, 1 July 2014.
