A plan to demolish a bridge noted for its elegant design and ‘moss bars’ has inspired local amenity groups to lobby local authorities.
Hartley Bridge, which carries a minor road over the River Shannon in County Leitrim, in the north west of Ireland, is slated for demolition. It is due to be replaced with a bypass and a new bridge.
The 1915-built structure was one of Ireland’s first reinforced concrete bridges and local amenity groups want its cultural and industrial heritage recognised. They hope that the council, which has planning permission to demolish the structure, will retain it as a pedestrian and cycling bridge.
