The design by Copeland Associates Architects for the pedestrian and cycle path has the backing of Auckland mayor Len Brown.

It would involve a 4m-wide, 1,000m long enclosed tube below the deck of the eastern 'clip-on'. The clip-ons are box girder sections added in 1969 to increase the bridge's capacity. They have recently been strengthened with the addition of some 900t of steel at a cost of about US$70m.

The proposal for the new pedestrian and cycle access has been put together by the Pathway Working Group, which includes engineering advisors Airey Consultants and Holmes Consulting Group and architect Copeland Associates.

The organisation GetAcross is campaigning for the pathway and is seeking feedback on the proposals.
