Balfour Beatty has been appointed by North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to carry out the work, which is part of an initiative to upgrade a stretch of the US 70 to become the Interstate 42.

The new project involves a 10.3km stretch between the Havelock Bypass and east of Thurman Road in Craven County. It will eliminate conventional intersections - such as those with stop signs and traffic signals – by creating new overpasses, bridges, ramps, loops and service roads. Balfour Beatty will complete the final design, assist NCDOT in acquiring the necessary right of way and construct the project.

The company has already been working on the US 70 Havelock Bypass and US 70 James City contracts as part of the creation of the new interstate.

Construction of the latest section is expected to begin in late 2023, with expected completion in summer 2028.
