A paper published in Nature Communications proposes the use of space-borne radar technology in bridge monitoring systems.
The paper proposes that geo-hazard risk assessment methods overlook technologies that continuously track bridge conditions. Less than 20% of the world’s bridges have structural health monitoring systems. But spaceborne technology, such as the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 satellite, could monitor 60% of bridges, including those in economically disadvantaged regions.
Global geo-hazard risk assessment of long-span bridges enhanced with InSAR availability is the work of Dominika Malinowska, Pietro Milillo, Cormac Reale, Chris Blenkinsopp and Giorgia Giardina and is published in Nature Communications.
