Dedication held for Woodrow Wilson Bridge
Celebrations have taken place to dedicate the first of two parallel spans of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, linking Maryland and Virginia. More than 1,400 invited guests attended the ceremony. The new crossing of the Potomac River has twin massive side-by-side drawbridges, with 45.7m leaves, and higher river clearances than the original bridge. This will reduce the number of openings needed at what has been one of the USA's worst traffic blackspots. The US$2.43 billion project has been made up of 45 separate contracts, including the drawbridge contract - worth US$186 million - which has been carried out by a joint venture of Edward Kraemer & Sons and American Bridge Company. The bridge opens to traffic next month.
