The incident led to immediate closure of the road beneath, which carries some 42,000 vehicles every weekday. A three-week strategy has been developed by the city and its contractor to stabilise the girders so that the road below can be reopened pending a decision on what to do about the permanent structure of the bridge.

Transferring the girder weight onto support cranes has led to minor improvement in the overall girder alignment. The contractor continues to brace the existing girders and will soon install the seventh girder to help stabilise the overall structure.

Once the seventh girder is installed, the city and its contractors will begin evaluating the overall structural stability to determine whether the girders must be repaired or replaced.
