The Canadian city of Edmonton has chosen a single-span arch bridge as its preferred design for the replacement of the nearly 100-year-old Walterdale Bridge.
Inspections had indicated that the bridge over the North Saskatchewan River should be replaced by 2014. The estimated cost of the arch bridge is US$132 million. It is more than US$30.5 million more expensive than the cheapest option but was the preferred style from the public open house held in November 2010. The city's transportation and public works committee will consider the recommendation in April.
