The US$4 billion Ohio River Bridges Project addresses the long-term, cross-river transportation needs in the Louisville-Southern Indiana region. It involves construction of two new bridges and the rebuilding the Kennedy Interchange.

"We are pleased that the Federal Highway Administration has confidence in the plan we have outlined," said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet interim project manager Matt Bullock. Approval of the financial plan means that federal funding can now be authorised for use in the construction. "With an aggressive design and construction schedule ahead of us, this is great news for the project," said Indiana Department of Transportation's project manager Paul Boone. "We'll continue coordinating with the FHWA to maintain forward movement."

The next step is for the Kentucky General Assembly to review the financial plan, as funding of the project still depends on this legislative assessment. Kentucky's share of the project is estimated to be almost US$3 billion.
