But although the multi-span cable-stayed bridge proposal is the favoured option, client Femern Baelt still intends to pursue the possibility of an immersed tube tunnel as an alternative. Three separate groups of consultants will be invited to bid for this consultancy.

The announcement follows last week's signing of the treaty between the two governments, which now has to be ratified by the respective parliaments.

Bids from the prequalified groups will be invited in December this year, with the contract expected to be signed early in 2009. Construction is currently slated to begin in 2012 and the link to open in 2018.
