Ireland's planning board An Bord Pleanála has opened an oral hearing into Kilkenny's proposed central access road, which includes a cable-stayed bridge over the River Nore.
The scheme is being promoted by Kilkenny's borough and county councils. The hearing was told that the aim of the road was to unblock congestion and ease traffic volumes on the city's two existing bridges.
Opponents to the scheme include the Heritage Council.
