The Pamban Rail Bridge in Tamil Nadu was officially opened by Shri Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India on Monday.
The bridge links the island of Rameswaram to the mainland and includes a 73m segment that rises to 17m to allow the passage of ships. This moveable span was launched last May (link opens in new tab).
The Prime Minister flagged off a train going over the bridge and a ship going under.
Pamban Bridge was built at a cost of US$84 million and is over 2km long. To minimise maintenance needs, it has a polysiloxane coating protecting it from corrosion caused by the marine environment.
