Demolition work is due to start this week on the remains of the Frances Scott Key Bridge as part of the project to replace it.
Maryland Transportation Authority has said that the work will start with the removal of the bridge’s deck over the Patapsco river, followed by demolition of sections on the landside approaches. Work will focus on removing parts of the structure that interfere with the alignment of the new bridge.
The replacement cable-stayed structure will be taller and wider than the previous bridge, and slightly down-river. It will have a different trestle configuration, and updated bridge pier foundation design, as well as additional pier protection elements.
The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early hours of 26 March 2024 took the lives of six workers and continues to affect regional and US economies. A design concept was unveiled in March (link opens in new tab). It is hoped that the new bridge will be opened in October 2028.
