A project to build a new central station in the Latvian capital Riga is marking the first phase of construction of a connecting rail bridge.
Consortium BERERIX, working for Rail Baltica on a US$470 million contract, used the balanced cantilever method for the first time in the Baltic region.
BERERIX consists of BESIX, Rizzani de Eccher and SIA RERE BUVE. The JV is supervised by Egis-Deutche Bahn.

The first phase was completed a month ahead of schedule, according to BESIX. It saw the building of piers, and the construction of a 140m span of the 1,065m bridge.
The bridge project, which includes embankments, emergency access and safety barriers, started last year (link opens in new tab). It will also see improvements to adjacent areas. It will have two rail tracks, and a pedestrian path and cycle lane.

The project also involves improvements to Riga’s central station, and installation of new rails in the city in a gauge that complies with the European rail network standard. This project is itself part of the US$5.5 billion Rail Baltica Project that aims to integrate the region’s rail infrastructure to that of northern and western Europe.
