A temporary crossing that has been in use since 2018 will be replaced by a new fixed tied-arch bridge in a major reconstruction project in the Illinois city of Chicago.
The removed Chicago Avenue Bridge structure was considered a historically significant second generation Chicago-type bascule bridge. Although the city offered it to any interested party for free, it was in such poor condition that dismantling it for relocation was not feasible, and there were no takers.

The project also includes full replacement of a nearby viaduct and construction of a new riverwalk connection under the bridge. Work will start in August and finish at the end of 2026.
